Frederik 8's Palę

The Brockdorff Palace

Read about the renovation of Frederik 8's Palace here.

The Crown Prince and Crown Princess’ future home in Copenhagen will be in the Brockdorff Palace located on the north eastern corner of Amalienborg. It was in this palace that The Crown Prince’s Grandfather, King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid lived.  Since the death of Queen Ingrid in 2000 the palace has remained empty, apart from two relatively small apartments which were available for use by Princess Benedikte and Queen Anne Marie for a period of time.

When taking up residence in the Brockdorff Palace The Crown Prince will continue the tradition where Crown Princes and Regents before him have all moved around amongst all four palaces which form Amalienborg.

After Crown Prince Frederik moved out of Christian 8’s Palace in the spring of 2004 and during the ongoing restoration of Frederik 8’s Palace at Amalienborg, The Crown Prince and Crown Princess will use the apartment in Christian 7’s Palace as their city dwelling. From the spring of 2004 The Crown Prince and Crown Princess also took possession of the Chancellery House at Fredensborg Palace.

The Brockdorff Palace was the last of Amalienborg’s four palaces to be acquired by the monarchy - it had been a military academy. This took place in 1827 and it is for this reason the palace bears all the trappings of the ideals of classicism which dominated the first half of the 19th Century. When the Royal Court took over this palace a complete refurbishment was necessary and this was carried out by the Architect Jørgen Hansen Koch (1787 – 1860).

(The History of Amalienborg and Frederik VIII’s Palace is based on the book "Royal Residences for 1000 years" by the Director of Søllerød Museum, Niels Peter Stilling. The book is published by Politiken Books and was launched in August 2003)
