The family tree

Just south of Flensborg Fjord is the renaissance castle of Glücksborg, which was built at the end of the 16th Century by Duke Hans the Younger, brother to King Frederik II of Denmark. It is here that the history of the last six generations of the Danish monarchy originates.

The Glücksborg Family ascended the Danish throne in 1863 when Christian IX was proclaimed King. He had an unenviable debut on the throne. The early years of the reign  was  political and military tension intensifying between Denmark and Germany and by 1864 an ill-fated war broke out which ended with Denmark losing Southern Jutland to the Germans.

Since then Denmark has been through times of great difficulty and times of great progress up to recent years where new political and cultural challenges are arising, as the process of globalisation accelerates.
