Christian X

Born in 1870
Reigned from 1912 – 1947

On the 9th May 1945, the Danish parliament re-opened, 4 days after Denmark had been liberated from the occupying German army.

Leading this wonderful event was King Christian X. Throughout the entire Nazi occupation of Denmark, the King had been a symbol of unity for the Danish people. Sadly, two years before the war ended the King had suffered a bad fall from his horse and was forced to live a quiet life of retirement. Much of his time was spent in a wheelchair and he rarely appeared in public.

Christian X’s reign was long and eventful. He was an active participant in political matters and reigned throughout two World Wars. When Denmark won back the northern provinces of Slesvig in a referendum in 1920, the King and the government disagreed over whether the town of Flensborg should remain in German territory. The King sacked his cabinet of ministers, creating a constitutional crisis, known today as the Easter Crisis. At this point the Danish Monarchy was on the point of disintegration by the people. Those voices calling for the introduction of a republic in Denmark were silenced when the King came to his senses and appointed a temporary government until new elections could be held and matters brought back on track again.
